Mapping of futures

Workshop — Prospective datavisualization

“Contemporary projections on possible futures are paradoxical: on the one hand transhumanism, on the other collapsology, between the two climate change. Either an injunction to energy transition or an injunction to ecological transition, always questioning their compatibility. How to study and graphically represent all the scenarios that make up our future projections? But also how to represent the relations between their conditions of existence? "

It is according to this syllabus that the Mapping of Futures workshop begins between the design research master of ENS-Paris-Saclay and the interaction design master of Telecom Paris under the governance of Dr Samuel Huron , designer of information and lecturer in Design at Télécom Paris. The goal being, at the end of the workshop, to conceptualize the prospecting, via the speculative design and the analysis of the futuristic scenarios according to a precise data visualization.

After a week of conferences, debates, research into scenarios and their representation, the proposal comes in two maps: one representing the futures put into tension via axes of interpretation, the other explaining the data.

Data are futures derived from past, present or future scientific or cultural (science fiction) references, inscribing scenarios at different time scales.

The axes of interpretation are characteristics of the data (representing, for example, a technology, a myth, cyberpunk, survivalism, etc.) placed in tension with each other in order to compare them, define them and assess their probability of accomplishment.
